Stovies evening
This traditional Scottish evening will be held at Bute Hall, and promises to be a really fun evening. You'll have a chance to taste the best of traditional Scottish fare; beware though ...keep your wits about you as the evening will conclude with one of Professor Clutton's infamous quizzes.
The quiz will challenge anyone who DARES to attend, but in order to increase the excitement to UNBEARABLE levels, we are requesting VOLUNTEERS for CONTINENTAL representation.
RESIDENTS in Veterinary ANAESTHESIA are invited to e-mail Professor Eddie Clutton (e.clutton@ed.ac.uk) to commit themselves to one of Four CONTINENTAL TEAMS: the AMERICAS; UK & Europe; ASIA and AUSTRALASIA. Under-populated teams will be "topped-up" by volunteers from the Audience. This is a spectacle NOT TO BE MISSED. Questions that give you HEADACHES; answers that make you MOAN with revived MEMORIES. The quiz night will make BOARDS seem like a stroll in the countryside. BE THERE!
Welcome Reception
This is to be hosted by Glasgow City Council in their City Chambers. The Chambers are undoubtedly one of Glasgow's most notable pieces of architecture and have been the city's municipal headquarters for almost 120 years. Built in the 1888, Queen Victoria opened the building - an indication of how important Glasgow was as a city during this period ...it was in fact it was nicknamed 'the second city of the empire'. Today, the Italian Renaissance style of the City Chambers still resonates this importance, and its façade proudly displays numerous sculptures representing all of the nations of the then British Empire. The insides of the City Chambers are equally impressive, with tremendous vaulted ceilings and ample use of marble – all in, a completely sumptuous décor. This will provide an ideal venue to socialise and enjoy contemporary Scottish music played by Fantoosh!.
Fantoosh! are Jenni Borthwick (fiddle), Pauline Salmond (cello) and Graham McDonald (piano). Based in the Scottish Borders, they perform a wide variety of music including Scottish traditional music arranged in their own unique way influenced by both jazz and classical styles. Since forming in 2005 Fantoosh! have performed at arts associations and festivals across Scotland and will soon start work on their second album. .
Conference Banquet
This will be held at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, where, as well as enjoying a stunning three course meal followed by a traditional Ceilidh, you'll also be free to view the Kelvingrove's magnificent art collections and stroll around its wonderful museum artifacts. It is recognised that Kelvingrove houses one of the finest civic art collections anywhere in Britain. The collection is one that the people of Glasgow hold dear to their hearts and are proud to share with all other folk who visit. You'll luxuriate in its grand atmosphere and maybe rub shoulders with such greats as Botticelli, Rembrandt and van Gogh …and you can also get to know some of the 'Glasgow Boys' too, including Guthrie, Lavery and Hornel.
Overlooked by the University of Glasgow the Kelvingrove is a splendid example of late Victorian architecture. This imposing sandstone building is one of the Glasgow's most prominent landmarks. Newly refurbished; the building has undergone a 3 year, £30 million refurbishment; the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is also conveniently located as it is situated in mature parkland near the lively West End of Glasgow.
Distillery tour
Any self respecting visit to Scotland wouldn't be complete without a visit to a Whisky Distillery. In our all-inclusive Tour you will get the chance to see how whisky is made and matured and as well as a guided tasting there will be ample opportunity to purchase ‘souvenirs'.
Accompanying Persons' Programme
The Falkirk Wheel
The Falkirk Wheel is the world's first and only rotating boat lift. It was officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen in the summer of 2002. The aim of the Wheel was to link the Forth and Clyde Canal, which lay 35m (115ft) below the level of the Union Canal. Historically, the two canals had been joined at Falkirk by a flight of 11 locks that stepped down across a distance of 1.5km, but these has been dismantled in 1933, breaking the link.
As a visitor, you will enjoy a boat trip beginning in the basin outside The Falkirk Wheel Visitor Centre. The journey starts by sailing into the bottom gondola of The Wheel, which then makes a graceful sweep, lifting the boat up to join the Union Canal 35m above. The ascent takes approximately 15 minutes, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the stunning views of the spectacular surrounding scenery.
Once lifted, the boat sails smoothly from The Wheel onto the Union Canal. This passes along the aqueduct, through the 180 metre Roughcastle Tunnel and under the historic - World Heritage site - Antonine Wall. The boat will then return for an effortless descent that gently carries the boat down over the Visitor Centre, and safely back into the basin by the boardwalk.
